A walk-in closet is a closet with enough floor area to stand inside and turn around in — usually from about 25 square feet up. You will also see it written walk in closet, or walk in closets in the plural, without the hyphen; they are the same thing. The difference from a reach-in is not just size but what becomes possible: storage on two or three walls instead of one, a centre island or a bench in the middle, seated dressing, full-length mirrors, and lighting designed for choosing clothes rather than finding them. At the larger end it stops being a closet and becomes a dressing room.

Most walk-in closets are installed in a single day by our own installers, typically eight to ten hours depending on size and complexity. A simple walk-in can be done in six to eight; a large system with an island may run ten to twelve, and a very elaborate design occasionally stretches to a day and a half. We book the date around you and, unlike the national chains, we are not back for a second and third visit.

A reach-in is a traditional closet with doors — you stand outside it and reach in. A walk-in is a room you step into, with storage on more than one wall. Walk-ins hold more, organize into dedicated zones, put everything within reach, give you room to dress inside, and take features a reach-in cannot: an island, seating, full-length mirrors. Reach-ins still make sense for guest rooms, hallways and secondary bedrooms.

It follows the dimensions. A narrow walk-in, around four feet wide, wants a straight layout down one wall, or a galley with facing walls if it is wide enough for two. Compact 6x6 walk-ins do best L-shaped. Standard 6x8 to 8x8 rooms get the most storage from a U-shape. At 8x10 and above, a U-shape with a centre island and room left over for a dressing area. Four to six feet is the average per person, but it varies a great deal. Women typically want six to eight feet or more for dresses, blouses and trousers; men usually need four to six for shirts, suits and trousers. For a couple, plan on ten to fifteen feet in total.
