Laundry Room Features
Three jobs happen in a laundry room and only one of them is washing. The fittings here are for the other two: somewhere to hang, and somewhere to fold.
What the room needs
Laundry Room Features
Most Toronto laundry rooms are a basement corner or a closet off a hallway, with two machines and nowhere to put anything down. The machines are already there and working; what is missing is a surface at the right height, a rail for what cannot go in the dryer, and a door in front of the detergent.
A front-loading pair is a gift here, because a counter can run straight across the top of both and become the folding surface the room never had. A top-loading pair rules that out and pushes the counter to a side wall instead, which is the first thing we check on the design visit.
One at a time
What each one does, and what it costs you
Every item is a separate line on your drawing, so you can take one out and see exactly what comes off the price.
- Pull-down hanging rod
- A rail on a sprung arm that draws down to shoulder height and returns flat against the underside of a cabinet. It is where shirts go straight from the dryer, and it takes no floor and no wall when it is not in use — which in a room this size is the whole argument for it.
- Clothes carrier
- A pull-out rail on runners, for the things that come out damp and need hanging now. Unlike a fixed rail it retracts fully into the cabinetry, so a narrow laundry closet can have hanging space without permanently losing the width to it.
- Ironing board drawer
- A board that folds out of a drawer at the right height and folds back into it, which removes the freestanding ironing board from the room entirely. In a laundry closet it is often the difference between ironing there and carrying everything upstairs.
- Folding counter over the machines
- A continuous counter across a front-loading pair, at a height you can fold at standing up. It is the most-used surface in the room and it costs less than most of the cabinetry above it.
- Deco doors with glass inserts
- Uppers with glass fronts, so detergent, softener and the rest are behind a door but not hidden. In a laundry that opens off a kitchen or a hallway this is what stops the room reading as a utility cupboard with the door left open.
- The gap between and beside the machines
- A pull-out three to six inches wide beside or between the machines, on full-extension runners, holding bottles upright. It is dead space in every laundry room in the city and it is the cheapest capacity in this list.
- Hamper and sorting drawers
- Tilt-out hampers or deep drawers with removable liners, so sorting happens in the room rather than in baskets on the floor. Two or three narrow ones work better than one wide one, because the sorting is the point.

Questions
Questions, answered
Not over them, because the lids have to open. The counter goes on an adjoining wall instead, and the run above the machines becomes cabinetry rather than worktop. If you are replacing the machines anyway, front-loaders change what is possible in the room more than any single fitting on this page.
About sixteen inches of clear height under whatever it is mounted to, and enough space in front to stand while it is down. It is rated to roughly thirty pounds, which is a full rail of shirts and not a rail of coats.
In a normally ventilated laundry room, yes — moisture-resistant board and sealed edges throughout. In an unventilated basement corner with an older dryer, tell us on the visit: the fix is usually a gap for airflow behind the run rather than a different material.
Typically $1,500 to $5,000. A counter, an upper run and a pull-down rod in a laundry closet is at the lower end; a full room with hampers, an ironing drawer, glass fronts and a sink surround is at the upper.
