Desk Height, Depth and Monitor Distance
A built-in desk is fixed once it is installed, so the dimensions are worth getting right the first time.
- Seated desk height: 29 to 30 inches for most adults.
- Standing height: 42 to 48 inches, depending on your height.
- Depth: 24 inches is the practical minimum. Thirty inches is much better if you run two monitors, because it lets you sit 20 to 30 inches back from the screens.
- Knee clearance: leave at least 24 inches of clear width and 24 inches of depth under the desktop.
If you switch between sitting and standing, a built-in surround with a separate height-adjustable desktop inside it gives you both without giving up the finished look.
Fitting an Office into a Toronto Condo
Condos rarely have a spare room, so the office has to borrow space from somewhere. Three approaches work reliably.
- A desk built under the window, using the full width of the wall and keeping the view and daylight.
- A reach-in closet converted into a work nook — typically 24 inches deep and 60 to 72 inches wide, which is enough for a desk, two shelves and a filing drawer behind doors that close at the end of the day.
- A den or dining alcove fitted with a desk on one wall and a wall bed on the other, so the room still works as a guest room.
One practical note: many Toronto condo walls are concrete or block behind the drywall, and some buildings restrict what you can anchor into them. Check with your property manager before design, not after — it changes how a built-in is fastened and occasionally where it can go.
Lighting for Video Calls
Put your desk so a window falls to one side of you rather than behind you — a window at your back turns you into a silhouette on every call. Add a task light at 3500K to 4000K for detail work, and keep any shelf lighting warmer and dimmer so it reads as background.
